The International Postgraduate Course in Volcanology aims to explain how volcanoes work and their associated risks and benefits, using the context of the volcanic area of La Garrotxa (Olot, Spain), as it offers the possibility of combining theoretical sessions with a visit to the outcrops to interpret the products of volcanism. Moreover, it represents a good example to analyse volcanic hazards and the integration of the volcanoes in society. The course reviews the latest developments in understanding the dynamics of volcanic eruptions and their effects in the prediction and prevention of volcanic risk (monitoring volcanoes, economic use of volcanoes, and educational aspects and integration volcanoes in society). The course includes also the application of e-tools for the long- and short-term hazard assessment, vulnerability and cost-benefit analyses.
